AI & Academic Integrity

A guide to information and resources about AI and academic integrity.

How to Cite AI

Before using any generative AI tool in your coursework, please confirm with your professor that using content produced by an AI tool is acceptable before citing it. Your professor may also have a specific way they would like you to reference the AI tool.

Generative AI is a relatively new technology. Because of this, citation styles may lack specific guidelines for referencing AI-generated content. Guidelines are being changed and updated regularly as the technology evolves. Check for the most recent recommendations before starting your work. Always err on the side of transparency if you use an AI tool. Here are some ways to cite generative AI responsibly:

  • Save a transcript of your chat. Make it available to your reader, perhaps by adding it as an appendix at the end of your work.
  • Describe the prompt that generated the specific AI response.
  • Include the date when the response was generated or date of access. This is important as these tools are being updated regularly.
  • Acknowledge how you used the tool. You can do this even if you do not include any of its generated content in your final product.

APA Citations for AI

APA has provided guidance for citing responses from ChatGPT or output from other generative AI tools.

Include a description of the prompt when quoting output from a generative AI tool in your paper. Use the author of the AI algorithm or the company who produced the tool in both the in-text citation and full reference citation. It is recommended to include the chat transcript as an appendix to your project.
