Audiovisual Sources

When citing film and other audiovisual media in APA style, use the citation form for the media type. In other words, if you watched a movie on DVD or on Netflix, cite it as a film. It is not necessary to specify how you watched a film, for instance if it is on DVD, in a theater or streaming online. If you are citing an episode for a TV series, use the citation format for TV series episode. If you saw a movie in the theater, use the citation format for film. The different media types are:

  • Film
  • TV series
  • TV series episode
  • Podcast
  • Podcast episode
  • Webinar
  • Classical music album or song
  • Modern music album or song
  • Artwork
  • Online streaming video
  • Photograph

Your APA citation for a video or film contains the following elements in this order:

  • Director
  • Date of publication
  • Title of motion picture
  • Production company

Your citation would look like this:

Director, D. D. (Director). (Date of publication). Title of motion picture [Film]. Production company.
