How to Read Library of Congress (LC) Call Numbers

How to Read Library of Congress (LC) Call Numbers

Every book has a call number — like an address — that tells you where it lives on the shelf. You'll find it on the book's spine and in the library catalogue.

💡 In the Catalogue vs On the Book

  • Catalogue: Call numbers are written in one line (e.g. HD62.5 .M368 2023)
  • On the Book: Call numbers are stacked vertically and read top to bottom
